Dr Nicolas Small

I trained at St Mary’s Hospital London, spending significant time in Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Psychiatry before I became a GP. I have been a GP Partner at Schopwick Surgery, Elstree since 1996 and as the practice has a strong educational ethos, quickly became involved in GP education. I was the GP Appraisal lead for Hertfordshire until 2012 and am also a GP Trainer. I have served on the Boards of Hertsmere PCT before Chairing Hertsmere’s Commissioning Locality in 2006 and am now the Chair of the new commissioning group Herts Valleys CCG as well as being a member of Hertfordshire’s Health & Wellbeing Board. I am passionate about commissioning and delivering the highest quality care for our patients, partly because of first hand experience of being a carer for my father for many years and I am especially interested in encouraging patient involvement in our practice through the Schopwick Patient’s Group. In my spare time I enjoy holidaying in my motor home and am also a Health Coordinator for Pekingese Dogs – working in liaison with the Kennel Club to try and address some of the breed’s health issues.

Dr Joanna Szafaryn

Dr Joanna Szafaryn has been working at Schopwick surgery since 1999, initially as a registrar and in 2001 was appointed as a full-time partner. In 2009 she was approved as a GP trainer and has enjoyed training young GPs since. She is a practice lead in Asthma and COPD, her additional interests are paediatrics and care for patients with learning disabilities. Her spare time is fully occupied by her two teenage children, husband and ever escaping beagle!

Dr Joshua Plaut

I qualified from Royal Free & University College Medical School in 2001. Before becoming a GP, I spent seven years training in general, vascular and then neurosurgery. I enjoy all aspects of general practice and I have particular interests in palliative care, ophthalmology and medical education. When I’m not working I enjoy spending time with my family (my two young children keep me very busy), playing guitar and supporting the best North London football team!

Dr Jay Vyas

I qualified in 2010 and have been at Schopwick since 2015.  I have an interest in Sports Medicine and Mental Health. I perform joint injections at the surgery. Away from Schopwick, I am a keen sports fan, supporting The Arsenal, and also enjoy participating when the kids allow me to.

Dr Ann McDougall

I qualified from University of Dundee and, before starting my General Practice training, spent two years training in psychiatry. I joined Schopwick as a partner in 1994, having previously trained and worked as a partner at a practice in Harrow. I enjoy all aspects of General practice and really value our shared ethos, at Schopwick, of keeping patient care at the centre of our decisions and the strong emphasis on our team working together to provide this care. I have been involved in medical education since 1990 and worked as a Programme Director for the Northwick Park General Practice Specialist Training Programme since 1992. In this role I have had a part in training a large number of GPs currently working both locally or more further afield and this has been most rewarding. When I am not working I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I also love to travel and have always enjoyed photographing my trips. I have, however, recently discovered the joys (and frustrations) of wildlife photography and this has become something which both challenges and nurtures me.
